Why I've Chosen to Wear More Dresses

A gentle shift in my wardrobe that’s been reshaping my daily rhythm during pregnancy.

Motherhood has a way of showing us what truly supports our well‑being. Over the past two years, I’ve been paying closer attention to the small choices that make my days feel calmer, lighter, and more aligned with the woman God is shaping me to be. Feeling more put together helps me feel more prepared for the daily struggles of motherhood. One of the simplest changes — and one of the most impactful — has been choosing to wear dresses more often.

What I love about wearing dresses is how naturally they fit into the intentional approach I try to cultivate at home. Dresses are uncomplicated. They’re one piece, breathable, and they move with me instead of restricting me.

There’s something deeply feminine and freeing about choosing clothing that honors the way God designed our bodies to move. Dresses have become a quiet way for me to embrace softness and simplicity in my everyday life — and in this season, to honor my growing belly. I’m four months pregnant with my third boy as I write this, and I knew early on that I wanted to keep my wardrobe minimal and choose staples that would carry me through several phases of pregnancy.

This felt especially important because I had just built myself a wardrobe of mostly natural fabrics before realizing that God had done the impossible and blessed me with another baby after five years of infertility. Within a few weeks of my first ultrasound, most of my clothes no longer fit. That’s when I realized how forgiving dresses are as weight shifts and the female body changes.

One of the biggest benefits I’ve noticed since wearing dresses more often is how much less tense and constricted my body feels. Tight waistbands, stiff denim, and synthetic fabrics always left me feeling squeezed and uncomfortable. As a mom of three boys, I’m constantly bending, lifting, kneeling, and moving — and dresses simply make all of that easier.

I’ve also struggled with water retention and cellulite for years, which led me to pay more attention to my lymphatic system. The more I learned, the more I realized that restrictive clothing wasn’t allowing my body to move or drain the way God designed it to. Choosing looser, breathable dresses has been a simple but meaningful way to support my circulation and overall well‑being.

There’s interesting research showing that clothing choices can influence circulation and lymphatic flow. Tight waistbands, restrictive pants, and synthetic materials can impede lymphatic drainage — the body’s natural detoxification system — and reduce healthy blood flow in the lower abdomen and legs.

Studies in lymphatic health note that unrestricted movement and looser garments support better lymphatic circulation, which can reduce swelling, improve energy, and support overall well‑being. Dresses, especially those made from natural fibers like cotton and linen, allow the body to move freely and breathe — which aligns beautifully with what I’ve personally experienced.

This change has been so practical. I feel lighter, my circulation feels better, and I’m not fighting my clothes throughout the day. Having a few dresses I can rotate — paired with simple jewelry — helps me feel put together without effort. And that matters in a home where one little boy and one big boy test my patience and energy daily. When I feel comfortable and confident, I’m calmer, gentler, and more able to create a low‑stress environment for my family. It also helps me show up as a woman my husband respects and admires — someone who carries herself with grace, even in the chaos of motherhood. Choosing dresses has become a small but meaningful way to support my well‑being so I can love my people well.

I’m reminded of Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Even our clothing choices — the simple, daily decisions — can be acts of honoring God. When we choose what brings peace, gentleness, and stewardship to our lives, we’re practicing obedience in quiet places. And fewer stressful decisions truly make me a better wife and mom, especially during pregnancy when emotions run high and everything feels a little harder.
